Trained as a scientist, I am now an artist specializing in bronze sculpture. However, my scientific background continues to be relevant: I developed a technique that allows me to produce small bronzes from my home studio. I begin with a fine bronze powder that, when mixed with an organic binder, captures the detail—including my fingerprints—in the rubber molds I make of my clay originals. I then fire the solidified pieces in a kiln to evaporate the binder and solidify the metal powder in a process known as sintering. I find inspiration in natural forms. Combining or utilizing recognizable elements (those of trees, mushrooms, etc.) in new ways gives a sculpture a sense of being unusual or unexpected, a sense that invites the viewer to look more closely. I hope that, through this closer inspection, the abstract impressions or emotions that prompted my sculptures will be revealed.
